Kevin Dorman
About Kevin
Raised in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Kevin (they/them) has always felt a strong connection to their voice. First gaining flexibility and control of their voice by playing with their family members and friends, Kevin grew in their skills through heavy involvement with the arts throughout their early life, including auditioned choirs, a capella groups, and an early career as a voice actor for half a dozen years. Looking for a way to channel their passion for voice production into a career, Kevin was immediately enthralled by speech-language pathology, which gave them both the knowledge of underlying mechanics of voice production/modification and how to teach others these skills in an efficient manner. Kevin founded Prismatic in 2016 to provide gender affirming voice work in an accessible format for their fellow North Carolinians, a service they were passionate about and was sorely lacking in the state. Kevin expanded their license from just North Carolina to include South Carolina, then Virginia and Georgia over the following years, and most recently, Kansas and New Mexico! They are a founding member of the Trans Voice Initiative and an active member of Charlotte Trans Health on the Transgender Provider Committee.

About Eli
Eli Van Hook (they/he) is a speech-language pathologist whose goal is to serve the trans and gender diverse community by providing the best gender affirming voice care possible. Eli received their Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology at Kean University in New Jersey. In graduate school, he co-created the Gender Spectrum Voice Inventory (GSVI), the first comprehensive trans voice assessment to be made for all folks across the gender spectrum. Eli’s research published on the GSVI can be found in the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association Perspectives publication. While their focus at Prismatic is primarily in gender affirming voice training, they also have experience and knowledge from her time as a graduate student with the Brigham and Women’s Hospital Voice Program in medical conditions (such as vocal nodules, head & neck cancer) that can further impede one’s own authentic vocal expression. To strive towards the best gender affirming voice care they can provide, they utilize and seek up-to-date evidence-based practices and the expertise of other gender diverse clinicians who have come before them.
In addition to their work at Prismatic, they currently work in an inpatient medical facility serving those with swallowing, voice, and language disorders. They live in Asheville, and on the weekends they can be found drawing architecture, on a hike, or snuggling their black cats Lior and Ezra.
"In the past, I was never been able to get the hang of self-instruction the way other transgender folks seem to—and after having unproductive training experiences elsewhere, I was almost resigned to the idea of my vocal dysphoria being permanent. I was sure that I was simply not the kind of person who was capable of successfully training their voice.
I'm so, so glad I didn't give up on vocal training before I met Eli. The vulnerability that this kind of training requires can be intimidating, but from our very first session, Eli's warmth, patience, humor, and encouragement cultivated an environment that felt welcoming and safe. This type of training will require continued dedication and practice even now that our lessons are complete, but I could simply never thank Eli enough for what they've already helped me achieve. I feel like I've been shown how to let out a voice I had no idea was inside of me, and that I can share myself with others with a confidence I didn't think I could ever achieve. Working with Eli has given me clarity, optimism, and belief in myself, and I'm so grateful to have had the opportunity to work with them."

I had loads of fun in my sessions, my personal favorite of which was watching stand-up on YouTube while working on my laugh. Cristel's foray into the voice world started with their own singing voice— they have firsthand experience attending therapy after experiencing changes to their voice post-thyroidectomy. In most online meetings, Cristel can be identified by their unwavering dedication to having Winnie the Pooh's house as their virtual background.
